NYSCF-Druckenmiller Fellow Justin Ichida is Lead Author on Groundbreaking Study PDF Print E-mail
NYSCF applauds NYSCF-Druckenmiller fellow Justin Ichida on his recently published work in Cell Stem Cell, bringing us closer to turning adult cells into patient-specific stem cells without the use of cancer causing genes. Building on the work of Lasker Prize-winning scientist Shinya Yamanaka, MD, PhD, Dr. Ichida and his colleagues at Harvard found a new and safer way to make stem cells by using chemicals to replace two of the four genes used to turn adult cells into induced pluiripotent stem cells (iPSCs), which are very similar to embryonic stem cells.

NYSCF Fellows Publish Research in Nature PDF Print E-mail
NYSCF applauds NYSCF-Druckenmiller fellows Gabsang Lee and Christopher Fasano for their work, recently published in Nature, demonstrating that a rare but devastating neurological disease can be modeled in a petri dish.  This holds exciting promise for understanding Familial Dysautonomia (FD), a genetic disease for which an animal model has been unavailable.  This work further highlights the importance of using stem cells as a model of disease and provides hope for drug discovery to combat the disease.

President Obama signs executive order lifting restrictions on federal funding for embryonic stem cell research PDF Print E-mail
The New York Stem Cell Foundation (NYSCF) today applauded President Barack Obama’s executive order overturning a Bush Administration policy that, for eight years, restricted the use of federal funds for human embryonic stem cell research to a limited number of stem cell lines created before August 9, 2001. While lauding this bold and important policy decision as an important first step, the organization noted that President Obama’s executive order does not permit federal funding for derivation of new human embryonic stem cell lines.
