The New York Stem Cell Foundation (NYSCF) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to accelerate stem cell research to cure the major diseases of our time.  Our programs are focused in three areas:

             •    Directing critical, advanced stem cell research in its own
laboratory and also supports advanced work in other
            leading institutions.     Read more »

 •    Developing the next generation of top stem cell scientists by training and supporting an elite group of post-doctoral research fellows.  Read more »
•    Convening the preeminent annual translation stem cell research conference and an on-going series of programs for scientists, policymakers and the public. Read more »

THE UNIQUE APPROACH OF THE NEW YORK STEM CELL FOUNDATION

The goal of The New York Stem Cell Foundation is to concentrate on translational “bench to bedside” research that will advance the search for cures of the major diseases of our time. The Foundation’s research will be conducted in consultation with its New York institutional partners, as well as Johns Hopkins, Harvard University, Columbia University, and our internationally renowned Medical Advisory Board.

NYSCF focuses on diseases where stem cell therapy shows the most promise. We have created private epicenters with a clearly focused clinical mandate, one that directs resources to the use of hESC, iPS, and SCNT research in advancing cures for such diseases as:

  • Diabetes and other auto-immune diseases like Lupus and Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Heart disease
  • Cancer
  • Spinal cord damage
  • Neuro-degenerative diseases, e.g., Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) and SMA (spinal muscular atrophy)

Criteria for inclusion of a disease on the Foundation’s priority list will be its clear medical importance and potential for cure using stem cell based methods, either cell therapy itself, or the use of stem cells for creation of new and more effective drugs. The clinical application of those areas will enable scientists to develop a deeper understanding of the underlying pathways of key diseases and eventual cures.

EMBRYONIC STEM CELL RESEARCH PRESENTS AN ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITY FOR NEW YORK

In addition to the medical benefits of its work, the Foundation will represent a significant economic development opportunity for New York City and the region.  The Foundation will provide a vehicle to both the scientific and medical communities to jumpstart opportunities for doctoral and post-doctoral students to chart careers in New York. Currently, New York City is home base for more than 25,000 scientists and the city produces 4,000 new life science graduate students annually. This group represents an extraordinary pool of both intellectual capital and economic strength for New York, but its presence here is increasingly threatened by the investments being made elsewhere in stem cell research. As an economic development tool for the city, NYSCF will help re-shape the area’s bio-tech landscape and allow New York’s medical and healthcare institutions - which collectively constitute the state’s largest employer - to remain a dominant force in the international scientific community.
